Identity Designed is a website featuring a range of successful visual identities from across the world. I found it interesting to see such a range of styles for different purposes and clients alongside each other, and also see what trends are being used in the design industry currently.
The website is useful for gaining inspiration, and some of the examples inspired my contribution to the group project where we developed a visual identity. It is also a useful tool for finding out more about the featured design studios.
Here are a few of the identities which stood out to me:
Broadgate
This design is created by dn&co for Broadgate, central London’s largest pedestrianised neighbourhood. The design group created a brand strategy and identity to change the perception of the neighbourhood and display what it has to offer.
Their design has a bold line running through their branded title and editorial layout, which helps connect each element of their identity, and is used to draw attention to areas of typography. The typeface used is a simple sans-serif font, which is used in white against the colour palette of bright coral, yellow, green and navy. All photography used has a duotone effect applied to link with the colours. This links with the work I have been creating for my magazine design in one of the modules.
I like the vibrancy and simplicity of this design, which makes it adaptable and consistent across their communications.
Campus
Campus is Google’s global network of co-working and event spaces. MultiAdaptor created this visual identity.
This design interested me because of its use of layering halftone, duotone images and typography.
The identity is defined by a rectangular outline in the centre of each design, which text is arranged within, and breaking out from. This provides a consistent element which draws the viewer's attention to the text first, and then the image behind.
The identity is used for a lot of information, so there are lots of variations of the design in multiple colours. Generally 2-3 colours have been used with at least 1 contrasting colour.
Despite not using a limited colour palette, the halftone elements and consistent use of typeface create a strong visual identity.
Coastal Pass
Coastal Pass is an initiative for visitors to explore the east coast of England, created by the National Coastal Tourism Academy. The visual identity was created by Mega.
They have used the typeface Graphik, which provides a bold sans-serif design which is easy to read. The colour scheme consists simply of navy, red and white, which links to the coastal theme, as well as being traditionally British, and provides strong contrast within the design.
I like their use of vertical typography on their poster design, which helps frame the photography in opposite corners, and I think the general simplicity of the design works well at fulfilling its purpose.
